Pedagogies of Feeling
February 5, 2010, Hellems 199, 3-5:00 PM
This talk develops the concept of affective legacies--the travel of emotion over time through the narratives of several individuals—around race relations, and explores how such legacies live in communicative practices and embodied performance. By analyzing ethnographic oral histories concerning cultural memories of black and white community members who lived through school desegregation, it attempts to accentuate the affective networks that underlie these stories and contemplate both how to interpret them and why they matter. The talk also addresses how to think about affective legacies in the process of fieldwork.
