Biography
Lawrence (Larry) R. Frey, Professor, has teaching and research interests in group interaction, applied communication (communication activism, communication and social justice, communication and community studies, and health communication), and communication research methods (quantitative and qualitative). His research seeks to understand how participation (especially by those who are underresourced and marginalized) in collective communicative practices makes a difference in people’s individual, relational, and collective lives. He received a B.S. from Northwestern University and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. Prior to coming to the University of Colorado at Boulder, he served as department chair at The University of Memphis and as a faculty member at Loyola University Chicago and, prior to that, at Wayne State University. He is the author/editor of 14 books (the most recent being a 2-volume set titled "Communication Activism"), 3 special journal issues, and more than 65 published book chapters and journal articles. He is the recipient of 16 distinguished scholarship awards, including (a) the Gerald M. Phillips Award for Distinguished Applied Communication Scholarship (lifetime achievement) from the National Communication Association (NCA); (b) the 2008, 2007, 2006, 1998, and 1994 Outstanding Scholarly Book Award from NCA's Applied Communication Division; and (c) the 2007, 2004, 2003, and the 2000 Ernest Bormann Research Award from NCA’s Group Communication Division. He is a past president of the Central States Communication Association and a recipient of the Outstanding Young Teacher Award from that organization, as well as a 2003 Master Teacher Award from the Communication and Instruction Interest Group of the Western States Communication Association.
