Biography
John P. Jackson, Jr., Associate Professor is interested in the history and rhetoric of science, argumentation, and rhetorical history. His published work has been focused on how scientific arguments circulate from the public sphere to the technical spheres of science and the law in the United States. He has written two books on how scientific arguments were used to both attack and defend racial segregation in the southern United States and co-authored or edited two books on the history of the scientific study of race more generally. He is currently working on the interaction of Darwinism with American social thought and the rhetoric of logical positivism. He teaches in rhetoric and argumentation and is the course coordinator for the Department’s Public Speaking class (Comm 1300). He earned his Ph.D. degree from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities (1997).
